Superstitions rooted in old Europe attribute certain powers to caraway, including the ability to hold on to inconstant lovers. This has given rise to an effective trick used by pigeon breeders, who mix caraway seed into their feed so that the birds will return to the pigeon house. It is also added to chicken feed to prevent the hens from wandering off.
