Flavors of France

A culinary journey to Lot-et-Garonne

Lot-et-Garonne is perhaps the France that you always hoped existed but could never quite find - medieval villages and sunflower fields, quiet roads and small farms in gently rolling countryside. One of the 'best kept secrets' in France!

Fruit growing is a speciality of the département which is renowned for its plums (the famous pruneaux d’Agen), strawberries, succulent melons and the pomme d’amour, Marmande tomatoes.

Lot-and-Garonne is the first french department for strawberry production. Since April 2009, 2 varieties received the Red Label : the Gariguette and the Ciflorette.

An other speciality : Marmande tomato

Marmande' is a classic beefsteak large-fruited tomato which produces the large, firm scarlet-red, ribbed fruits each weighing 160 to 180 grams.
This French heritage variety is famous throughout Europe, it is distinguished by its irregular cushion shape and touch of pink on the shoulders.

Also called "Pomme d'amour", this meaty fruit is ideal grilled, fried, sliced or simply raw

Also called "croustade", its an apple pie flavoured with armagnac and vanilla sugar.

The best wines of the Lot-et-Garonne are to be found in the northwest corner. Here, a stone’s throw from the official Bordeaux vineyards, the Côtes de Duras reds are usually made from 100% Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon and the whites from Sauvignon, Mauzac or Semillon.

The wines of Buzet are very popular, while others such as Brulhois, Marmandais, vin du Tsar, vin du Mézinais (a dry white wine produced from the colombard grape is an ideal apéritif.) and Agenais table wines are all well worth trying.
